Wintry snap to target UK with chill winds and gales bringing snow to some parts – The Weather Channel

Parts of Britain are waking up to snow on Sunday as gales are set to batter the country through the day.

Weather warnings for snow and ice are in place across western Scotland and northern Ireland until 11am, while the wintry weather is also set to cause disruption across parts of the Midlands.

Meanwhile, winds of up to 65mph are expected in southern parts of the UK.

Bands of sleet and snow will push eastwards through the morning, and this will clear to heavy showers through the day.

The wind is a cold north-westerly with gales possible around the coast. Temperatures should struggle to climb above 10 or 11C – but with the wind chill, it could feel much colder.

Police forces reported closed roads due to snow on Sunday morning.

The Woodhead Pass in the Pennines was closed because of snow and a collision, while Leicestershire Police said the fast lane of the M1 between junctions 22 and 23 was “unsafe” due to snowfall.

After a brief respite from the wintry conditions on Monday, the wet and windy weather is expected to make a return towards the middle of the week.

Multiple weather warnings are in place for much of the coming week. An alert for snow and ice continues into Monday morning. Two further yellow weather warnings for wind have been issued. The first covers much of Northern Ireland, and will begin at 3pm on Tuesday and last until midnight.

Another is in place for much of England from around midnight on Wednesday until 3pm.

During the warning periods, there could be gusts of 60mph-70mph across Northern Ireland, with 50mph-55mph seen quite widely across England and 60mph-65mph in coastal areas.

A band of heavy rain will also push south-eastwards, and will be followed by some heavy showers during Tuesday and Wednesday.

A spokesperson for The Weather Channel said: “Across the British Isles on Sunday, temperatures will be slightly below normal, and it will feel even colder in the fresh to strong westerly wind. ‘Feel like’ temperatures through the afternoon will be below freezing across northern areas, and in the low single figures across the south.

“Snow will fall across the northern mountains, with 10-15cm accumulation across the higher levels of the Scottish mountains, whilst snow will also fall to lower levels at times across northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.”
