At least two Army personnel died and 26 others were rescued after a building collapsed in Kumarhatti near Solan of Himachal Pradesh. The three-storey building collapsed amid a heavy downpour and at a time when the Army personnel along with their families were having lunch.

“Two casualties have been reported and 26 others have been saved from the debris of the building. However, we believe more people are trapped inside. Most of them are Army personnel who were having lunch in the restaurant inside the building when it collapsed,” ACP Shiv Kumar told indianexpress.com.

The building collapsed around 3.50 pm near the Kumarhatti-Nahan highway in Solan. A search and rescue operation is underway.

A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has been pressed into service from Panchkula as the area has been experiencing heavy downpour. The Army personnel were from Dagshai cantonment near Solan.

Himachal Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, who is monitoring the situation said that a proper investigation into the incident will be done. “The NDRF team from Panchkula have reached the spot along with medical teams. Rescue operations are underway. I hope within the next few hours rescue operations will conclude. Proper investigation will be done,” Thakur was quoted as saying by ANI.
