Jarrod Dyson hit a two-run single in the eighth inning to lead the host Kansas City Royals to a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night in an interleague game. Dyson scored later in the inning on Alcides Escobar’s single to put the Royals up 3-0, and they won for the 11th time in 14 games.

Wade Davis struck out Andrew McCutchen swinging to end the eighth with two Pirates on base to pick up the victory. Greg Holland survived a shaky ninth, allowing a run on four hits and a walk, but struck out Gregory Polanco with the bases loaded for his 21st save in 24 tries.

Pirates starter Gerrit Cole (13-4), who leads the majors in victories, was charged with all three runs and five hits in 7  1/3 innings.

Cubs 5, Reds 4 • Rookie Kyle Schwarber hit a tying two-run homer in the ninth inning, then hit a solo shot in the 13th to lead Chicago Cubs to victory on the road.

The Cubs (50-42) remained 8½ games behind the Cardinals (59-34) in the National League Central. Pittsburgh (54-39) dropped to five games behind St. Louis.

Rays 1, Phillies 0 • Nathan Karns homered and pitched five innings, spoilng the big-league debut of Philadelphia’s Aaron Nola and leading visiting Tampa Bay. In 20,223 games in Phillies franchise history, this was the first time they lost a game 1-0 on a homer by the opposing pitcher.

Rangers 9, Rockies 0 • Shin-Soo Choo hit for the cycle and Matt Harrison earned his first win in 14 months as Texas rolled on the road.

Brewers 8, Indians 1 • Matt Garza pitched six shutout innings in his return from the disabled list and Jean Segura hit a two-run homer to lift host Milwaukee.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Giants 9, Padres 3 • Rookie Chris Heston didn’t allow a hit until the sixth and Hector Sanchez hit a grand slam to boost visiting San Francisco. Heston, who threw a no-hitter against thek Mets on June 9, allowed one hit and faced just two over the minimum in 7 1/3 innings.

Mets 7, Nationals 2 • Pinch-hitter Eric Campbell put visiting New York ahead with his two-run single in the seventh, and a stagnant Mets lineup finally came through with several clutch hits to back Jacob deGrom.

Braves 4, Dodgers 3 • Chris Johnson drove in two runs and Alex Wood overcame control problems on a hot night for host Atlanta.

Marlins 3, Diamondbacks 0 • Mat Latos was sharp in his seven innings of work and Michael Morse homered to boost visiting Miami.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Mariners 11, Tigers 9 • Franklin Gutierrez’s pinch-hit grand slam in the eighth lifted visiting Seattle. Detroit led 8-6 before Neftali Feliz allowed five runs in the eighth.

Angels 7, Twins 0 • Chris Iannetta homered and drove in four runs, and Matt Shoemaker was strong on the mound as host Los Angeles won.

Blue Jays 7, Athletics 1 • Russell Martin, Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion homered to power Toronto to victory on the road.

Astros 8, Red Sox 3 • Chris Carter hit a two-run homer as host Houston extended Boston’s losing streak to six games.

Yankees 3, Orioles 2 • Former Cardinal Brendan Ryan hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the sixth, lifting host New York.
