College football’s most versatile players – 247Sports

We can get position-obsessed in sports. No sport represents that more than basketball, where players are often pigeonholed into five roles based on height and skillset. But as the NBA Finals march on, we’ve seen a continued revolution of sorts – basketball’s morphed into a positionless sport. Versatility and the ability to guard multiple positions has never been more prized in the NBA.

This crosses over into other sports as well. Baseball has always valued middle-of-the-field position players athletic enough to play a number of positions. Hockey loves strong-skating defensemen capable of handling the puck and pushing an offense. Football, however, is among the most rigid in terms of adhesion to positions. Coaches obsess over the potential of players: Is he a wide receiver or defensive back? Is this athletic high school QB a future safety?

But football’s also valued versatility more frequently of late. As offenses spread the field and up the tempo, hybrid defensive players who can play in space and defend against the pass are prized. Offensively, pass-catching running backs and dual-threat QBs present a myriad of options. Schools with vision can turn high school wide receivers and running backs into All-American tight ends and defensive lineman – think what Wisconsin, Iowa and TCU often do so well.

Versatility is paramount in the modern college football game. And a few players nationally encompass that word more than others. These 10 players are college football’s most versatile. Think of them as the “Jabrill Peppers All-Stars.”
