There’s no excuse for this. As sportswriters, we should be doing better covering and talking about the Spurs. They’ve been a top, top team every year since they drafted Tim Duncan in 1997, and they’re still a top, top team, somewhat unbelievably making the transition to a Kawhi Leonard-led team without the usual few years of rebuilding. Their sustained greatness in today’s NBA is impossible to replicate, though other teams have certainly been trying. Their two-decade run of relevance is unmatched in the game, unmatched perhaps in all major American sports.

That sustained greatness is part of what makes them hard to write about. When a team is good forever, it becomes hard to find new ways to talk about how it’s good. More importantly, however, the Spurs are hard to write about because they’ve built their organization to be hard to write about.
