TEMPERATURES this Mother’s Day weekend are set to soar as the UK is forecast to be hotter than Turkey and Spain.

The Met Office is predicting that in western areas, temperatures could reach 17 or 18C during the weekend that clocks go forward by one hour.

The forecast for Istanbul in Turkey is 14C on Saturday and 16C on Sunday.

In Madrid, Spain, temperatures on Saturday are only expected to reach 12C while on Sunday it could rise to 14.

Spring looks like it could be arriving this weekend, just in time for Mother’s Day.

Met Office forecaster Emma Boorman said: “There will be an area of high pressure coming in this weekend bringing in fine and settled conditions on both Saturday and Sunday.

“We can expect plenty of sunshine, particularly through Sunday. It will only be in the far north of Scotland that it will stay cloudy.

“In the sunshine it will feel quite warm, especially in western areas such as the west of Wales where it will get up to 17 or 18 degrees celsius.

“In the east it will be a little cooler with around 14 or 15 degrees across England and Wales.

“In Northern Ireland we can expect highs of 16 degrees.

“There will be a bit of cloud in central and eastern areas, but it will be patchy and nothing significant, nothing like it has been.

“Mothering Sunday is looking really good.

“The main point is that particularly through Saturday and Sunday if you’re on the south eastern coast there will be quite a keen breeze coming through on the far east.

“If you’re off to the Kent or Essex seaside there will be a bit of an edge to the breeze but in land it will be warmer where there is shelter.”

While temperatures are expected to soar later on in the day in the UK, a weather pattern where conditions vary a great deal between day and night could mean Britain is still in store for some frosty weather this weekend.

Things are expected to pick up from today, with double-digit temperatures forecast for some areas.

The change in weather is due to high pressure bringing clearer skies and longer periods of sun to the UK.

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: “For Friday it’s a bit of a three-way split, so the far north and far south looks quite cloudy, and there could be some rain around, especially during the morning.

“Things will start to brighten up across the north and south over the afternoon.

“The best of the weather will be across Northern Ireland, southern Scotland, northern England and parts of north Wales, which will see the best of the sunshine – pretty much unbroken in some of those areas.

“There could be the odd spot of fog, but that will lift quite quickly.

“It will be quite chilly to begin with, but then sunny and dry with temperatures up to 13C which is a little bit above average for this time of year and it should feel quite pleasant.

“In terms of sunshine, Saturday will be the better of the two days.”
