CBS 2017-18 Fall Schedule: ‘Big Bang Theory’ Spinoff ‘Young Sheldon,’ ‘SWAT’ Head to Thursday – Variety

CBS is fortifying its Thursday lineup in the fall with “The Big Bang Theory” spinoff “Young Sheldon” landing the 8:30 p.m. time slot behind TV’s top-rated comedy while new drama “SWAT” moves into the 10 p.m. berth.

The Thursday comedy block will bow in late fall after CBS’ five “Thursday Night Football” games are concluded. Before that, “Big Bang” will air on Monday to serve as a launch pad for new comedy “9JKL.” Kevin James’ “Kevin Can Wait” heads to the Monday 9 p.m. slot, paired with another new sitcom, “Me, Myself and I.”

CBS is adding six series in the fall — three comedies and three dramas — with two more on the bench for midseason.

CBS Corp. chief Leslie Moonves said “Young Sheldon” was a very different style of show from “Big Bang” — the spinoff is single-camera, for starters. “Tonally, they are very different but they work,” he said.

CBS has the benefit of stability on most of its nights. Tuesday stays the same with the drama stack of “NCIS,” “Bull” and “NCIS: New Orleans.”

“Survivor” remains the 8 p.m. anchor of Wednesday. New drama “Seal Team” moves to 9 p.m. while “Criminal Minds” slides back an hour to 10 p.m.

On Thursday after football, “Mom” and “Life in Pieces” return to the 9-10 p.m. hour, followed by the police drama “SWAT.” The high-octane drama stars “Criminal Minds” vet Shemar Moore.

“Shemar Moore is back…our audience loves him,” said Kelly Kahl, senior exec VP of CBS Primetime. “This is a noisy show, this is perfect for 10 0’clock. We’re kicking down some doors.”

Friday is also a carbon copy of this past season: “MacGyver,” “Hawaii 5-0” and “Blue Bloods.” Saturday is amortization theater from 8-10 p.m. with drama reruns capped by newsmagazine “48 Hours,” which is heading into its 30th year.

On Sunday,” new drama “Wisdom of the Crowd” lands at 8 p.m. With “Elementary” out of the 10 p.m. slot and waiting for a midseason berth, “NCIS: Los Angeles” and “Madam Secretary” slide back an hour. The 7 p.m. hour as ever is home to “60 Minutes” which is planning special programming to mark its 50th anniversary year.

“Wisdom” stars Jeremy Piven as a billionaire who creates an app to crowd-source solving crimes after his daughter is murdered.

“This is a smart crime show,” Kahl said. “We had the same feeling we had with ‘CSI’ a few years back. That was a show that moved the crime drama forward. We feel this show can do that.”

On deck for midseason are the new comedy “By the Book” and drama “Instinct,” starring “Good Wife” alum Alan Cumming.
