Every week, The Walking Dead’s very own Josh McDermitt, who plays Dr. Eugene Porter, is taking EW behind the scenes of the hit AMC horror series. For each episode, McDermitt will share his thoughts on what went down and what’s coming up, plus walk us through the ins and outs of the show. This week, McDermitt dives into the 13th episode of season 7, “Bury Me Here.”

Carol is back and Morgan is stuck somewhere in between his new and former self. Last night’s episode of The Walking Dead written by Scott M. Gimple and directed by Alrick Riley contained several pivotal decisions made by some reluctant characters.

I’m happy Carol (Melissa McBride) seems to be back on board with her former self. I don’t think there’s anybody who watches The Walking Dead that doesn’t love to see Carol kick some major ass. “We have to get ready. We have to fight,” she says while Ezekiel (Khary Payton) is replanting the crops eaten by weevils. She’s in a different place and if I had to choose between Carol and Richard fighting the Saviors, I’m picking Carol every time. Ezekiel’s response of, “We do. But not today,” is a step in the right direction, but I’m wondering why he still seems to hesitate. Is it because he needs to grow more crops so the Saviors don’t think he’s up to something? Or is he still reeling at the death of some of his citizens and just needs a moment to gather himself?

But something that concerns me is seeing Morgan (Lennie James) start to have flashbacks from his “Clear” days. He obviously saw Benjamin (Logan Miller) almost like a son by mistakenly calling him “Duane.” I found it interesting when Morgan confronted Richard (Karl Makinen) about the missing cantaloupe and Richard not knowing what kind of wild animal was standing in his dorm room. I kept waiting for something crazy to happen right there, but Morgan kept a lid on it for the moment. That is until we saw the next drop-off with the Saviors and Morgan smashes Richard’s head into the ground, killing him instantly. None of the Kingdomers stepped in to break up the fight. These guys have a long way to go if they’re actually going to step up and fight. Maybe that’s another reason why Ezekiel said, “But not today.”

Losing Richard, in my opinion, is a blow to the Kingdom. Yes, he was a loose cannon. Yes, he was sinister in his plotting to get Ezekiel to open his eyes and do something about the Saviors. But it seems like Richard was the only one in the Kingdom living in the real world. To see him break down and cry after his plan went awry and the group lost Benjamin (Logan Miller) was something we needed to see and I’m glad we did. This guy was ready to sacrifice himself in order to make the Kingdom fight and get out from under the Saviors’ reign of terror. Extra points for passion and willingness to surrender your life. But all of those points are taken away because your plan sucked and got Benjamin killed. Next time, you might want to think about having someone like Eugene (Josh McDermitt) look over your plans for your death march.

I want to give a shout-out to Joshua Mikel, the guy playing Jared the Savior. This dude delights me. The look in Joshua’s eyes makes me think Jared is going to fly off the handle and do something unexpected at any moment. I kind of love it and I get a kick out of watching him.
