Bastian Schweinsteiger has stated he will not leave Manchester United for another club in Europe, and stressed he is ready for action should the team need him.

Schweinsteiger, 32, is yet to make an appearance for United since Jose Mourinho took over this summer. Sources have told ESPN FC that the midfielder remains a player United do not intend to keep, despite reports from Germany that he is set to stay at the club.

The former Bayern Munich has taken to Twitter to elaborate on his future amid speculation of a move away from Old Trafford.

He said: “MUFC will be my last club in Europe. I respect other clubs, but Manchester United was the only one which could make me leave Bayern Munich.

“I will be ready, if the team needs me. This is all I can say about the current situation. I want to thank the fans for the amazing support over the recent weeks.”

Should Schweinsteiger stay at Old Trafford, rather than seek a move, then United would have to try to negotiate a settlement to terminate his contract.

The signings of Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan this summer have made Schweinsteiger’s prospects of featuring in the first team more remote.

Schweinsteiger joined United on a three-year contract in 2015 after spending 13 seasons with Bayern Munich where he won 22 major honours including eight Bundesliga titles and the Champions League.

Last month he retired from international football with Germany having won 120 caps, won the World Cup in 2014 and featured at the European Championships in 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 as well as the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cups.
