The Preakness Stakes will be run at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, on Saturday, May 20, 2017 (5/20/17), and the second leg of the Triple Crown features Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming, who is trained by Todd Pletcher and piloted by John Velazquez.
According to Accuweather.com, the forecast calls for cloudy skies and temperatures hovering in the mid-60s at the 6:48 p.m. Eastern post-time.
As of 2 p.m., track conditions at Pimlico were listed as muddy for Race 7. The Preakness Stakes is Race No. 13 on the 14-race card and is run at 1 3/16 miles.
Mark Casse, trainer for second-favorite Classic Empire, was eager to see how the reigning juvenile male champion would respond to mild weather conditions.
“This winter when we were having some issues, he kind of didn’t want to go to the track,” Casse said. “Now he’s eager to go there and eager to train. He’s going to be real happy when it cools off, too. That will really get him feeling well. We’re anxious for a little cooler weather. It was pretty hot.”
