Oklahoma spring football breakout candidate No. 2: Can Marquise Overton bounce back from ankle injury? – Dallas News

Oklahoma DT Marquise Overton was off to a promising start during his sophomore season in 2016 before an ankle injury and eventual surgery sidelined him for the rest of the season.

He recorded two tackles in the Sooners’ second game against ULM before he got hurt, but has made a full recovery in time for spring practice. As a freshman, Overton recorded five tackles, including a sack.

He’ll fight with fellow DTs Matt Romar and Du’Vonta Lampkin for playing time in 2017, but his chances at earning snaps are considerably heightened with Oklahoma’s move to more four-man fronts next season.

However, according to DC Mike Stoops, it might be a long way back for Overton after being away from football since September.

“He’s rusty,” Stoops said. “You can tell he’s been off for a long time, but he’ll  get better … It’s just being away from football, not doing it all last year. It’s hard. But he’ll get better as the spring goes on.”
